The article Songbird shows how evolution works on the BBC news site discusses a "ring species" of warblers in the Himalayas. "Ring species" are fascinating; I think that there is also a sub-arctic gull which makes similar sub-species around its range.

Friends in high places, Jan and Martin took this picture of 8 Wilderness Road from the air today. Our front gate is exactly in the centre of the picture; our red car is out front, our shed roof is catching sunlight, and the green dot in the back garden is Ethan's sand pit. Thanks Martin and Jan!
Ice thickness is a topic of interest to our friends at the Army Corps or Engineers, of course. They have a complete research paper on the topic. Perhaps I am too cautious, although I think that the close packing of some of the vehicles on the Lake St. Clair Ice would have brought them into danger.
